Eero Saarinen developed the Tulip Armchair as part of the pedestal series in the 1950s. The Saarinen Tulip Chair, the corresponding pedestal table, and other furniture he developed represent the peak of Eero Saarinen’s career, in which these lasting icons of modern classic furniture were brought to the forefront.
The Tulip Chair from his Pedestal Group collection is a reflection of Saarinen’s ability to create timeless classics. He developed the Tulip series as part of his designs for “organic furniture” with which he aimed to restore formal order to the interior setting. Ever since his time working with Charles Eames, he has found a fascination with creating “organic furniture,” that is, furniture in a single form made from a single material. Saarinen’s drive was to rid interior space from the “sea of legs” that he thought created visual clutter.
Early versions of the Tulip Chair were upholstered in wool, although cotton fabrics and leather are now more popular upholstery options.
